Simple Wedding Cake Designs

Some brides love a lavish wedding with extravagant colors, gowns, and decorations. Some couples outdo anything they've ever seen by employing doves, balloons, a horse- drawn carriage, fountains, and blaring trumpets. But other couples are more comfortable with a restrained, low-key theme for their wedding. These couples may certainly want a simple wedding cake design that complements the minimalism of the day, and places the focus on the couple and the promise they are about to make. Even though a cake is basic, it may still be stunningly beautiful in its simplicity.

Many bakers and pastry chefs are going to relish the chance to create something unique but understated. With trends these days going towards unconventional colors, shapes, different flavors and wacky cake toppers, the chance to fashion an understated, traditional wedding cake will be welcomed.

The simple wedding cake design will often be round layers of various sizes, simply stacked in a shape suggesting a pyramid, that is, larger on the bottom and getting smaller towards the top. The layers are sometimes square or rectangular rather than round. Traditional wedding cake is white, with a white or ivory buttercream frosting. Generally, sugar flowers that echo the colors of the bridesmaids' gowns are the only embellishment. Often, one layer will be made of chocolate cake rather than white. Really, though, there is nothing more tasty or traditional than a good quality, white wedding cake.

Other designs crafted of sugar or marzipan may be butterflies, doves, hearts, or ribbons. Certainly a bride and groom may choose to forego any of these flourishes and stick with flowers or nothing at all to decorate the cake. White frosting may be piped or dotted around the layers to add visual interest.

The most basic topper on a traditional wedding cake is a miniature bride and groom. These may be personalized to resemble the actual couple, or a more generic pair. Sometimes a crystal couple is just the classy touch that pushes a simple wedding cake from acceptable to remarkable. Other simple toppers include an arch of flowers and ribbons, hearts, more flowers, or the couple's names and the date fashioned in sugar script.

These days, when so many events are over-the-top endeavors to show up the other guys, a simple wedding is lovely and portrays confidence. Certainly the centerpiece of the reception-- a simple wedding cake-- is appropriate to the theme.
